Classical Flattop Mandolin #357 $3800 (includes case) **ON HOLD**
This Classical
Flattop mandolin is the second of the 5th generation..
It is a further development of the 4th generation. It
has more carbin fibre on the bracing of the top and the top
is thinner. A thinner top means the top is lighter and
the ratio of the mass of the back to the top is higher.
Less mass in the top means less energy is required to move
the top which translates to more volume. The increased
ratio of the back over the top should improve the sound.
In practice this has worked, well with a clear clean and
bright sound with lots of ring and heaps of volume. It also projects very well
becasue most of the sound comes from the top.
After
that rather dry description, what do I really think of this
mandolin? Well I think it sounds amazing.
It has the typical King Billy Pine sweet clear sound with
lots of ring and sustain, plus it is really loud.
Added to that, it will improve with age and playing.
King Billy Pine tops seem to open up after about 8 weeks of
solid playing. This one is still very green so in time
will sound even better.
Woods are - King Billy Pine top, Tasmanian
Blackwood back,
sides and neck, Indian Rosewood bindings, Mulga
fingerboard (12in radius, 30mm wide at the nut), 13 & 3/4
inch scale length, Schaller GrandTune nickel tuners with
Ebony knobs and solid Ebony one piece bridge. It has
my custom made tailpiece with engraved Ebony cover.
Varnish finish. It comes with Thomastic stark (heavy) strings installed. Price includes a case.
Note: This mandolin cannot have an internal pickup
installed because of the way it is braced.
For my American customers, note that this mandolin does not
have any shell inlay. The fingerboard marker dots are
opal, and the headstock inlay is Huon Pine, European Maple
and Blackwood wood. There is no need for a USA import
permit and wildlife paperwork but Lacey act paperwork may be
required. However, note there is a US import tariff payable before I can ship to
the USA.
Sound clips coming
soon, or when I get around to it.
